Gearbox and transfer.

Posted: February 4, 2013 in Uncategorized

After speaking with Simon from SC when attending Bingley Hall and purchasing my parts. The estimated engine figures are as expected and SC confirmed that with the spec i’m building we are looking at around the 115bhp mark. I have also been in contact with John @ Guessworks regarding the gearbox specs. Now as the car is not a “tourer” and more of a “weekend mess around” or sprint car so i’m a little un certain of what is best for my application. Im not one to be banging through the gears and constantly driving like a mad man but i’m sure that i’m going to need something a little more than just a rebuilt box, std drops and a four pin diff. Comments are welcome on this one guys so please feel free to leave your recommendations on gear sets, drop gears, and diff ratio’s. Currently i believe the box is a 3.44 diff setup. SC recommend in their build manual a 3.44 or a 3.1 diff for their 1293 8 valve engine. Probably just depending on the usage of the car?

What I need to know is. What works for what i’m looking for and whats a waste of time and money?

I also would like to try and find some more info on the floating bush setup in the primary gear? Anyone out there prepared to give a little explanation on this and what the benefits are of running this setup are and is it advisable for a higher than standard power engine?

Also had a phone call today (Monday 4/2/13) from John at SC stating that my pistons and cam cover have been machined and are ready for shipping. It’s good service at SC! These were asked to be posted at the end of this week as i will be away and the items will just be sat at the post office no doubt getting kicked around the floor.

Its stated to move along now.

Lack of updates

Posted: November 13, 2012 in Uncategorized

The recent lack of updates are due to being away on holiday.

The plan was to get the block prepped before going away and while I was away to get the pistons machined by SC for valve clearance, and also get the rods worked ready for a dry build when I returned. This is now maybe 2 weeks behind due to the machine shops workload.

There was no way that I was going to push them to complete the work in the week prior to going away.

Hopefully I can get back on track and spend some time building the engine up leading up to the Xmas break

More updates will follow.

The block , crank and head have been loaded up to go for machining this week. The block will go to the machine shop we use at work. The head will go to Radtec for welding and then up to the machine shop to be milled and the head face skimmed to ensure flatness when mating to the block face.

I thought id get a picture of the SC drilling template sat on the block showing the re-drilling positions that are required to match the head to the block.

Shown below.

Some other jobs i have been getting on with was to clean up the gearbox ready to go to Guessworks for rebuilding. I would have done this myself but with the increased torque that will be produced by this engine, I would rather Guessworks build a gearbox that will be able to put the traction onto the road as best as possible and minimise the chances of any breakages.

A few bits arrived today.

4 x AE 21253 +060″ Slipper type pistons.

Cam bearing set

Core plugs

5 x Long head studs.

Mini Spares centre main strap kit.

The pistons will have to go away to SC to be machines for valve pockets this should be done in a couple of weeks. The centre main journal cap will also be machined by the engineering company to alloy the fitment of the steel strap. It is fitted to improve the strength of the centre cap as cranks have been known to flex slightly at higher RPM’s.

What this will look like.

Everyone likes a quick mock up…

The start

Posted: September 28, 2012 in Uncategorized

Welcome.

The purpose of this blog is to follow the build process of a Specialist Components based 1330cc twin cam A series engine conversion into my 1979 mini 1000.

The car:

The car build started in 2006 and over 5 years was converted into a lightweight Gulf racing GT40 inspired sprint car. The only issue since its been back on the road…. well its just not fast enough. After the time and money spent on the car it needs an engine to match its looks.

The idea:

Around 115 Bhp and 95 Lbft of torque in a car that weighs less than 650KG’s.

The deadline:

May 2013
